How to Safely Change a Tire on Texas Roads

Hey there, road warriors! If you’ve ever found yourself stranded with a flat tire on the open roads of Texas, you know how daunting it can be. But don’t fret! Changing a tire is a manageable task, and we at Texas Towing Guys are here to help you through the process. Let’s roll up our sleeves and get into how you can safely and efficiently change that tire.
1. Find a Safe Spot
First things first, if you notice that your tire is flat while driving, don’t panic. Safely steer your vehicle to the side of the road, away from traffic. Look for a flat, stable surface to park your car. If you’re on a busy highway, try to get to a designated parking area or the shoulder where your vehicle is out of the way. Always prioritize your safety and the safety of others.
2. Gather Your Tools
Before you pop the trunk, make sure you have everything you need on hand. Here’s a quick checklist:
- Spare tire
- Jack
- Lug wrench
- Wheel chocks or bricks (to prevent the vehicle from rolling)
- Reflective triangles or roadside flares for visibility
- Gloves and a flashlight (in case you need it)
If you notice anything missing from your toolkit, give Texas Towing Guys a call. We can deliver supplies or help with the tire change!
3. Prepare Your Vehicle
Once you’re parked safely, turn on your hazard lights. This will help alert other drivers that you’re stationary. If you have reflective triangles or flares, set them up behind your vehicle to increase visibility.
Next, apply the wheel chocks to the opposite tires (front and back) of the flat tire. This will secure the vehicle and prevent any movement while you’re working.
4. Loosen the Lug Nuts
Before using the jack, it’s easier to loosen the lug nuts while the tire is still on the ground. Use the lug wrench to turn the lug nuts counterclockwise. Remember—don’t remove them completely; just break the seal so they’re easier to remove after the vehicle is raised.
5. Jack Up Your Vehicle
Position the jack underneath the jacking point of your vehicle (refer to your owner’s manual if you’re unsure). Once in place, slowly raise the vehicle until the flat tire is off the ground. Safety tip: Never place any part of your body under the vehicle while it's elevated.
6. Remove the Flat Tire
Now, remove the lug nuts completely and take off the flat tire. Place it under the vehicle (just in case!!) before pulling out the spare tire.
7. Install the Spare Tire
Align the spare tire with the wheel hub and push it onto the bolts. Hand-tighten the lug nuts as much as you can.
8. Lower Your Vehicle and Tighten the Lug Nuts
Carefully lower the vehicle back to the ground. Once it’s secure, tighten the lug nuts in a crisscross pattern to ensure they’re evenly secured. Give each one a final tight turn to make sure it’s snug.
9. Clean Up and Drive Safely
Once you’re done, store the flat tire and tools back in your trunk. Don’t forget to stop by a tire shop to fix or replace that flat soon!
